Today marks the last day of International Men’s Health Week — a time to raise awareness, break down stigma, and put a spotlight on the importance of men’s mental and physical health.
At BBL we recognise that this is especially relevant in the construction industry, where 85% of the workforce is male. That’s why we’re committed to encouraging open conversations and creating a culture where wellbeing is prioritised both on and off site.
So, how can we better support the health of our employees and colleagues?
- Toolbox Talks
Regular, relevant sessions that cover both physical safety and mental wellbeing. Use these to talk openly about:
- Injury prevention and best practices
- Stress management and signs of burnout
- Where to go for help and support
- Encourage Open Conversations
Create a safe space where employees feel comfortable speaking up. A simple “How are you doing?” can go a long way.
- Promote Regular Health Check-Ups
Encourage team members to book in for annual physicals, screenings, and GP visits. Prevention is key.
- Share Resources & Helplines
Have a list of support services available on-site or in staff rooms. Make it easy to access help—when it’s needed most. This could include:
- Mates in Mind - Text: "BEAMATE" to 85258
- Lighthouse Charity - Call: 0345 605 1956
- Samaritans Charity - Call: 116 123
The NHS also has some great advice and support available for men’s health. From mental wellbeing to physical check-ups, their Men’s Health Hub is full of helpful resources. Check it out here- https://www.nhsprofessionals.nhs.uk/health-and-wellbeing/helpful-links/mens-health-hub
- Lead by Example
When leaders talk openly about health, it empowers others to do the same. Let’s normalise putting wellbeing first.
Let’s work together to support our teams and create a culture where health and safety means more than just PPE — it means protecting people inside and out.
